Meet Alicia. She is Beauty Revived.
Alicia has Peutz Jehers syndrome. Peutz Jehers syndrome is a rare inherited disease that is characterised by gastrointestinal polyps in association with pigmentation affecting skin and mucous membranes. The most noticeable feature is the appearance of melanocytic macules (pigmented spots). Tan, dark brown, or bluish black flat patches 1 to 5 mm in size are seen around the mouth, lips, gums, inner lining of the mouth, eyes, hands and feet, fingers and toes. The risk of developing some form of internal cancer is 15 times greater for patients with Peutz Jehers syndrome compared with the general population. Approximately 50% of patients with Peutz Jehers syndrome develop and die from cancer by 57 years of age.
Only 30 people are suffering from this syndrome in The Netherlands, and in this country Alicia’s pigmentation is one of the most visual cases known. The spots are concentrated on her lips, and over the bridge of her nose. Mother nature brought her a very special characteristic feature as the spots over the bridge of her nose are forming a small perpendicular line. The spots on her lips are the most noticeable, giving her smile a wonderful, unique look – as the macules giving her lips a dark brown / blueish tint.
The higher risk of developing cancer and her unique appearance is something Alicia is struggling with now and then. She has heard the most terrible things that people has said to her about her appearance, something that could make her very insecure. But Alicia is a strong young woman. She has learned to deal with stares and comments, they made her stronger. One of the most valuable lessons she has learned so far is that she now knows she’s unique. The macules are a part of who she is: a beautiful young woman, with a beautiful appearance and a light in her heart.
“She is beautiful, but not like those girls in the magazine. She is beautiful, for the way she thinks. She is beautiful, for that sparkle in her eyes when she talks about something she loves. She is beautiful, for her ability to make other people smile even if she is sad. No, she isn’t only beautiful for something as temporary as her looks. She is beautiful deep down to her soul.” – F.
