Meet Brett. He is Beauty Revived.
Brett Bartholomew is an amazing high school senior, and I am so proud to nominate him for this year’s Beauty Revived campaign. Brett is a senior at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he is the co-president of his senior class. Throughout his high school career, Brett has been involved in student government, athletics, service and his church youth group. He is also a hardworking young man who has worked at the local restaurant since his sophomore year in high school. His associates praise him for his job performance, great attitude with customers and willingness to go beyond his assignment to help his associates whenever it is necessary.
Growing up in South Florida, Brett has a love for being on the water that defines who he is. Having had the privilege of spending much of his time on and around the water, Brett exudes the gentle, enthusiastic confidence of a young man aware and appreciate of both the beauty of the sea and the reality that the beautiful sea can sometimes be ruthless and unforgiving. Though surfing is truly his happy place and first love, he also loves to be on his boat fishing, diving or spending time with friends and family. After meeting with Brett and getting to know him a little better, we chose the beach and the ocean for his photo session, the perfect place for a boy who grew up on the water.
In life, heroes are in everyday people and in everyday moments. In August 2015, Brett’s best friend, John, was killed in a boating accident. Brett had been invited to join his friends on the outing that day, but declined because of a family commitment. All were lifelong friends – schoolmates since kindergarten. Of the fivee who survived the crash, all were injured and one was paralyzed. This has affected Brett deeply and is not something he talks about much with his family. However, as the saying goes, actions speak louder than words. And, what stood out to me was that in this tragedy, Brett became an everyday hero. Instead of losing himself to sadness, he made sure that he was and is there for his John’s family in their time of grieving. Instead of making it about his loss, he made it about them. Brett has focused his attention on John’s mother, grandmother and younger sister, Chloe. He drives Chloe home from school almost everyday, something that John did and would have been doing if things were different. Chloe says that she feels closer to her brother when she is with Brett. As a symbol of her comfort with Brett, she asked him to be her escort for the School homecoming court this year.
This kindness and sense of responsibility is not something that we see in teenagers that often. It is these traits that make Brett so beautiful, on the inside and outside. And it is his actions in the aftermath of tragedy that make him a hero and my perfect choice to be a part of the Beauty Revived Campaign.
About the Photographer
I am a lifestyle portrait photographer in the South Florida area. I love photographing the connections between people, and have been lucky to be able to do that for more than 10 years now. I actually started out as an attorney, and took my first photography class on film while I was in law school, but never imagined that it could be my career. I started my photography business after the birth of my second child, and never looked back. I currently live in the Fort Lauderdale area, with my husband and three children, all of whom keep me very busy!
