Meet Chance-Alisha Shaw Photography
What if all you needed in life was a chance? A chance to be loved. A chance to find your dreams. A chance to explore and learn. A chance to grow healthy. A chance to have a family.
5 years ago Lisa received a phone call, as she often did, of a baby. A safe haven baby that was born and left at a hospital on the other side of the country. A beautiful Haitian baby that was born with no arms and no legs. A scared mother with few resources did the only thing she could do and that was to leave her sweet baby in the arms of hospital professionals who could hopefully find him a family and give him a chance. They sent Lisa a photo and when she and her husband looked at it, this little angel’s spirit spoke to them from across the country. He was meant for their family!
Tetra-amelia and Meromelia are very rare and many babies with this condition have additional health concerns that limit their ability to survive past birth.
Although, they knew it would be a risk, it was one their hearts were willing to take! This wasn’t the first time Lisa and Richard opened their hearts and their home to a child in need of love. This incredible little boy was being welcomed by 25 siblings!! When they arrived home to a celebratory welcome, one of his sisters said “Let’s name him Chance, since now he has a chance.” Under their roof, no one is different or lacking. Everyone helps everyone else and unconditional love ricochets off every wall. Not all of them have special needs, but many of them do and this bonds together those who serve and those who are being served like nothing else can.
Lisa, Richard and their full house have given Chance more than any child could dream of. His days are filled with sibling play, cruising around in his custom wheel chair and rolling, scooting and running from place to place. Nothing stops him from getting where he wants to go.
The first thing you notice about Chance, is his smile! It’s vibrant, genuine and speaks to your soul. He has curly lashes that made me jealous and a little scare on his chin where he bonked once. While at the photo shoot, he could hardly sit still just like any 5 year old. He has a wicked stall where he hoists his lower body in the air while his head and shoulders support him. He was curious and we exchanged many questions. He loves his brothers and sisters, Spiderman, chocolate ice cream and playing video games. He is starting kindergarten this year and likes to swim. He wants to go to the moon when he grows up and be just like Dash on the Incredibles.
He is loved by his older and younger siblings and since his arrival, he’s been able to help welcome 9 more siblings into his family. Some are now grown and starting families of their own.
Any concerns about the well-being of these children are put to rest when you meet one and see the smiles they give and the dreams they have for their future. They are learning to work, to love and to contribute to a family with no preconceived notions about what that should look like…things many of us take for granted.
It was a joy meeting this little boy and his family. You can tell that Chance’s spirit is much bigger than his little body and he’ll do amazing things in his life all because someone was willing to give him a chance.
Short Bio of Photographer
Hi, I’m Alisha Shaw, lover of life and time holder. It’s my job to wrap my arms around this moment, the magic and joy of today, and hold it for you in photos and video. I create, inspire and reach out to give today a voice that can be cherished long after the sun sets and tomorrow dawns.
I spend my days doting on my 3 unicorn children (as my friends call them since they are magical and the best thing I’ve ever created), entertaining clients and serving wherever God leads me. I love everything about Christmas which starts in July and runs through January-it’s the same for you right? In quiet moments, you’ll find me reading to my children, baking cookies for a neighbor and day dreaming of the next family I get to hold time for. All of this I am blessed to be able to do, in my little corner of Utah by Zion National Park, with my high school sweet heart & biggest fan by my side who without him, none of it would be possible.
