|How has this photographer helped you?
Katelyn is constantly blogging and sharing her life through social media. I first found out about her about 6 months ago via instagram. She is always sharing tips and helping out photographers in need. She is now using periscope where she can give behind the scenes mentoring to photographers watching all around the globe. She inspires me daily to be a better person and a better photographer and makes me inspired to strive towards my life long goals.
|Why does this photographer deserve to be recognized?
Katelyn is such a genuine human being, and I’ve never even met her! I cant even imagine how nice she is in person. She is willing to help anybody she comes across that is in need. She is an OUTSTANDING photographer, but she has an even bigger heart. She always has a huge smile on her face and is always looking on the positive side of things. She is honest, compassionate, and true to herself. She has built her business from the ground and created such a successful photography career. She inspires me daily, not only with her breathtaking portfolio, but her outlook on life. I can only hope that I can meet her one day.
How did you get started in photography? Or tell us about the moment when you knew that photography was for you.
I started back in my college dorm room when I was twenty years old! It seems like it was both yesterday and forever ago. I loved the creative side of my life but it wasn’t until I found photography that I actually thought “Hmm, I may actually be able to make a career out of this!”. I started a small business in high school and just morphed that into Katelyn James Photography and the rest is history!
How did you figure out your Photography/editing style?
A LOT OF PRACTICE! I have been so tempted over the years to sway into other “looks” just because of the trends that were popping up everywhere. I’m so thankful that I have stuck to my signature look and that I haven’t given in to the pressure of feeling like I needed to change because I was different. The recent season of editing involves a lot of film tones and it’s gorgeous… but it’s not me! I love colors, pop and crispiness!
What has been your biggest setback?
Myself! I think I over think things sometimes instead of just doing them! I also want to wait until things are PERFECT before launching them and I have proven to myself over and over again that progress is definitely better than perfection! If I had waited on perfection, I would have never launched THE COLLECTION (http://the-kj-collection.myshopify.com/) and thousands of photographers wouldn’t have the resources they have today!
What gives you the passion to keep going?
I love creating new things and I love business! Business ideas spark my creativity and keep me engaged. I feel inspired when I see my clients randomly share images that mean the world to them… even YEARS after they were taken! This is a beautiful job!!!
What is one thing you wish every Photographer knew?
That there isn’t one definition of success. You can’t look to others to define success because that is a losing battle. Your success is never going to look like anyone else’s and that’s OK!
We would love for you to give us one tip, any tip regarding Photography.
Be VERY picky about your style and what you show! I love sun flare but it’s not really MY STYLE and so I never blog images that have so much sun flare that there isn’t any POP! This is one way I stay super consistent across the board!
What is a quote you live by?
“God is Good”. Sounds simple but it’s true… and because that is true, I have A LOT of promises that I can count on from His word!
What is your next Photography goal?
To continue to create helpful educational content online for photographers ANYWHERE!
What does real beauty mean to you?
Real beauty to me is being confident in who you are. It’s seeing things a little differently and embracing it even though it’s different. 🙂
How do you instill real beauty into your clients?
I love making my couples find their inner modeling skills. So often I get the email saying “I just don’t think we’ll be able to look like your other clients! They look so natural and we’re awkward!”. The couples that send these emails are normally my BEST sessions! 🙂
