Meet Lauren. She is Beauty Revived.
As a young parent, I was often told that my precious baby girl would turn into a sullen, distant, and difficult teenager. Now that we have made it most of the way through the teenage years, it is with great relief that I write that none of these predictions have turned into reality. On the contrary, my wife and I have found that raising our daughter, Lauren, has been easy, rewarding, and satisfying. My wife and I are under no delusion that Lauren’s success has anything to do with what we have or have not done. Rather, we recognize that Lauren’s Christian faith have endowed her with compassion and courage. These values have allowed Lauren to grow into the person that she is today.
Our family firmly believes that adversity does not build character but instead reveals it. Lauren’s character was put on display before her Sophomore year even started. As a young dancer, Lauren had waited for years to become a member of our local high school dance team. During the first week of summer practice, Lauren performed a difficult dance move and instantly felt her hamstring pop. Following multiple consultations, we were told that she might not dance again and there was certainly no guarantee that she would ever dance at the high level demanded by her dance team. Her orthopedist told her that the best route back to recovery would be rest followed by months of arduous physical therapy and exercise. Faced with this daunting task, Lauren’s courage was on full display. Through pain and time-consuming therapy sessions, Lauren pressed on through the first semester of her Sophomore year. Game after game during her recuperation, she stood on the sideline with her chin held high and a smile on her face as she watched her dance team perform without her. With faith in God and her physical therapist, her hamstring healed and she finished the football season with her dance team on the field.
As great a dancer as she is at this time, Lauren is an even better person. Her most distinguishing characteristic is her compassion for others. Whether at school or in the community, Lauren is a peace maker. She hates to see people in distress or in conflict and she never hesitates to assert herself into a dispute if she believes that she can help smooth out the edges. She enjoys sharing her passion for good decision making with young students in our community by speaking at elementary schools throughout the local school district. However, her compassion for others is most vibrantly on display through her writing. Lauren has a passion for journalism and writes a bi-monthly opinion column for the local newspaper. Through her writing, Lauren shows her compassion for all of humanity. Whether she is writing about health concerns for local athletes or analyzing constitutional issues that affect the entire nation, her point of view is always based upon what is in the best interest of the greater good.
Raising teenagers is not a job to be taken lightly; however, my wife and I have experienced great joy and we have had a lot fun as we have watched Lauren grow into a courageous and compassionate Christian.
