Meet Maggie-Aubrey Bahr Storyteller
We spent the majority of the night inside a busy marketplace, Maggie in a leotard and me chasing her around with a camera. We talked, laughed and enjoyed every new and fun idea that crossed our minds. Maggie is a kind, energetic young lady, and it was such a joy to get the chance to witness pieces of her story. She didn’t seem to mind how busy it was inside the marketplace, or how people watched her dance and goof off; she entertained while they ate.
We decided to leave the crowded marketplace to get some shots of her dancing in the fresh Florida summer air. I love that she changed into a mismatched outfit, staying true to her style and personality. As we reached a courtyard in central Tampa, I asked her if there was a song she would like to dance to. Although I could barely hear the music, as she danced I watched the world fall into her fingertips. This was the dance of a young, brave soul.
1“But I’m only Human
And I bleed when I fall down
I’m only human
And I crash and break down…”
Her contemporary style was refreshing on a humid Florida night. She has so much grace and power it is hard to believe she is just 12 years old.
Maggie is the youngest of four siblings. She is a supporter and friend to many, a talented dancer, and even a young entrepreneur. She began dancing when she was 2 years old and it quickly turned into a passion for her. Maggie says dancing helps her to be herself. Because dancing has become such a passion for her, she loves to share it with those around her.
A few years ago, she noticed a few of her classmates from dance had trouble keeping up with some of the moves. She advocated for the girls who have Down syndrome, and became a teacher’s aide for a special class where they could learn at their own pace. She has continued to help in this class for the last few years. It brings her happiness to see her friends become better dancers and enjoy themselves. Seeing the unabashed joy in others as they dance inspired her entrepreneurial spirit.
Maggie started a small business last October making inspiring shirts and tank tops. She titled her first line “I am”. It included phrases like “I am powerful” “I am flexible”, and “I am accepting”. She is preparing to launch another line specifically for anti-bullying. Her first shirt will say, “I stand up for others.” She has an uplifting outlook on life and it truly shows through her ideas and creativity.
When I first read about Maggie, I knew that I wanted to share her story with the world. To her mother, to me, and every other person who is lucky enough to get to know her sweet soul, she is an everyday hero. She will forever touch the lives of those fortunate to see her dance.
