Stephanie: Ambitious, Optimistic, Resolute.
“A Leader, a Friend, an Inspiration.”
Stephanie embodies the purpose of Beauty Revived. Ever since I met her two years ago, she has shown me what a truly beautiful person is. She dedicates her time to helping others as the president of her organization. Her unyielding attitude towards life has pushed her through the hardest of times. She is the definition of good. Read Stephanie’s story below, in her own words.
“My fondest childhood memories included waking up to my grandmother Poa-Poa’s soft hands stroking my face, smelling her homemade dumplings sizzling in the kitchen, and listening to her excitement when winning a game of Mahjong. As an immigrant from China my grandma raised her five children in New York City when my grandfather died at a young age. She didn’t know how to write, read, or speak English and made ends meet sewing at a sweatshop. My grandmother fought to survive in a world where the odds were stacked against her. She was an amazing cook, she was loving, and she was beautiful. My siblings and I will never forget the work ethic and resilience that Poa-Poa has instilled in us. The day she passed away was one of the worst in my life. I ran up to my room, knelt down at the foot of her empty bed, and made a promise. “I will not let you down Poa-Poa, you will be proud of me one day, just wait and see.”
When Delaney asked me to do this Beauty Revived session I thought, Why me? After last semester’s health hurdles of having scabies and allergic dermatitis, I didn’t feel pretty. A reflection on some past adversities changed my mind. One shouldn’t let their external appearance affect so much of their inner self worth or confidence. There have been times where I couldn’t afford medicine or worried about making rent, times I didn’t know where to spend the holidays, and times where I felt hopeless over things I couldn’t control. Through each of these struggles, there have been many kind and giving people who wouldn’t let me give up. People who have inspired me to believe in not only my current self but in who I could become.
Four years ago, unsure of whether or not a higher education was in my future, I thought of my grandmother and what she would have wanted for me. Four years later I have paid my way through college, became President of a professional business fraternity, and am graduating with a full time job offer in New York City. This session was an opportunity to thank the people who have touched my life throughout the years. I hope you all can see that through these photographs is a woman who finally believes in herself because you believed in that young girl she was before.”
