Story told by Kelley:
The only thing I have EVER wanted was to be a mom and after 2 rounds of IVF, we got a positive pregnancy test! Finally I was going to get that chance! On April 24th, I worked a night shift & noticed that I felt short of breath while walking, but didn’t think anything of it. I was off that Monday & Tuesday & worked outside some. Tuesday night, I was crying in pain and I could not lay down on the bed. I had severe pain between my shoulder blades, I assumed I had pulled a muscle while working in the yard.
On Wednesday April 27th, I went back to work & went to see my PCP. The test showed that I was having a heart attack. I was in shock. I was only 12 weeks. I was shipped from one hospital to a larger one and on arrival my room was filled with SO many doctors! I was immediately sent to Cath lab. There Dr. Dagubatti ( the best cardiologist in the world in my eyes) found that my circumflex atery was 99% blocked, LAD 90% blocked & RT coronary artery was 90% blocked. He stented the circumflex, which is what was causing my pain, and after consultation with other cardiologist suggested bypass surg.
My first question was will this hurt my baby? They could not give me a straight answer. Luckily Dr. Dagubatti went back & looked at my cath and decide he could fix me by doing another cath instead of having to open me up. I had 5 stents placed. I left the hospital two days later feeling great. The pregnancy continued. My little baby was growing and moving around. We found out we were having a girl & we picked out a name for her, Kelton. (Named after my grandfather & Johnny’s grandmother because they meant so much to us.)
But then it happened again, after another normal Friday at work on June 24th, I had my second heart attack. I was tired that day but nothing unusual. This time, I had all the symptoms: sweaty, severe chest pain, numbness left arm, nausea, vomiting and pain in left jaw. Johnny rushed me to the local hospital & they flew me to Greenville. I was really scared this time. I just kept praying for Kelton to be OK. I wasn’t that concerned about me, I felt like I would be ok but this was 2 heart attacks and I was only 20 weeks, I was so scared for my baby. The cath went fine, all was well except that I could not take in a deep breath. I was full of fluid after the cath and my heart just could not pump fast enough.
On Sunday June 26th, 2 days after my heart attack, I was intubated because I just could not breathe on my own. I don’t remember much about this time, but I do remember every day the US tech came and did a scan of Kelton to make sure she was ok. My little fighter was great! I was extubated after 5 days on vent. Luckily Kelton was not affected by any of my issues. Kelton was delivered at 9:30 10/26/2011, a beautiful healthy 5lb 6 oz and 17 ½ long . She was perfect. I would do everything all over again if I had to. Kelton is truly the greatest gift I have ever received. She was prayed for before she was conceived, her safety I prayed for daily when she was in utero, and I pray for her daily now for continued health & happiness. I thank God every night for another day that I get to spend with her. She is the joy of my life – she IS my Soul mate. I truly believe that my job is this life was to bring her into this world. I think God has great plans for her.
